The Faithful: The King, The Pope, The Princess
Sat, Aug 14th, 7:00 PM @ Crosstown Theater
Crosstown Theater, 1350 Concourse Ave, #280 Memphis, TN 38104
A Pope John Paul II lollipop. An Elvis Presley shower curtain. A Princess Diana teacup. These are just some of the countless pieces of memorabilia that these pop culture icons’ most devoted fans collect and cherish... but why? The Faithful’s director, Annie Berman, explores the deep veneration and legacies of the Pope, the Princess, and the King. Over the course of 20 years, Berman profiles these figures’ biggest fans and makes numerous pilgrimages to Vatican City, Graceland, and Kensington Palace. As the years go by, the film itself becomes increasingly entwined with Berman’s daily life and identity, much like how these officially-licensed knick-knacks define the fans she filmed.

Diasporas Now is a live-streaming platform for multidisciplinary artists from various non-Western backgrounds that use performance as radical acts of self-representation. The platform is a collective manifestation of personal and often political identities reflecting the multitude of minority voices under the hegemonic culture. Diasporas Now is founded and curated by final year MA students at the Royal College of Art, Rieko Whitfield, Lulu Wang, and Paola Estrella.
The first iteration of Diasporas Now includes artists of Asian, Afro-Caribbean, and Latin American diasporas. This event expands the boundaries of performance as a medium by exhibiting a diverse range of forms such as dance, music, spoken word, and installation.
The platform will launch on the 1st of July at 16:00 via RCA2021, featuring works by RCA students Adam Dove, Ashleigh Williams, Catalina Correa, Josh Woolford with Ijeoma Uzoukwu, Lulu Wang, Ning Zhou, Paola Estrella, and Rieko Whitfield, and guest artists Whiskey Chow and Chooc Ly Tan. The event will be live-streamed as both pre-recorded and real time performances.
THIS IS A SPELL by Miranda Chao
Jun 20, 2021 11 AM PT/2 PM ET to 5 PM PT/8 PM ET
The Shed, Seattle, WA
This work is an animated, interactive projection, set in a single shed in Georgetown Seattle. This is a spell. It is my spell, and it may be yours if you wish. I seek to create a space that contains energy, and amplifies the energy of those who enter it. These are my interpretations of what constitutes as sacred. Take it and make of it what you will, channel it into something personal, or release it into the ether.
